What To Do If You Find a Dog or Cat Wearing a Together Tag
Rest assured that finding a dog or cat wearing a Together Tag is not like finding a stray - this animal belongs to a loving owner who wants it back! Together Tag pets are typically reunited with their owners within 48 hours.
- If you have found a pet with a Together Tag, first check for a phone number on the tag. If there is one, call that number. If there is no phone number or if you are unable to reach anyone by calling, immediately go to togethertag.com and click on the "Found a Pet" link. Enter the tag ID in the text field and then click "Submit." You will see the pet's profile on the page that follows, including the owner's contact information.
- Make sure that you also check the pet's profile page for any special care information. Do your best to follow instructions, so that the dog remains healthy and happy, something that will make your time as his or her guardian much more manageable—even enjoyable!
- Check pet for injuries - If the pet is constantly cleaning or favoring a specific area, you will want to pay close attention to that spot to see if there are any visible lacerations, bleeding or other trauma. Foot and leg wounds are among the most common traumatic injuries in pets. Correct first aid can help prevent further damage until you can get to the vet. If serious, and a trip to the vet is necessary, check the pet's Together Tag profile and see if there is a veterinarian listed. Consult the listed vet first - if medical attention is needed, make sure to keep all receipts and paperwork.
- Make sure the pet has food and water - if you're not a pet owner and don't have any food on hand, ask a neighbor or friend for advice or suggestions so that you can obtain a short-term supply of an appropriate food
- If you are not a pet owner or are not in a position to care for the animal, call a friend or neighbor and ask for help
- If you can't bring the animal into your house, make sure it is in an enclosed area (fenced in yard or garage) with an old blanket or towel to lie down on if it's cold
- Try to keep the pet in quiet and calm place
- Always proceed with caution with a dog or cat you do not know. A pet in new surroundings may be easily frightened or nervous. Approach the pet slowly, offer your hand for them to sniff, speak in a soothing voice, and perhaps offer a treat. Give the pet plenty of alone time to get comfortable and explore its surroundings.
- Take a few minutes to look up the local humane society and animal care facility (vet's office) and keep those phone numbers handy
- If you've tried to reach the primary contact, but have not had success,
please check the owner's account information again and make attempts to contact
the secondary and/or out-of-area contacts, if listed. If a week goes by and you still have not heard
from the primary, secondary or out-of-area contacts, please contact us with the details.
