What To Do If Your Dog or Cat Gets Lost

We understand that being without your pet is like being without a family member or loved one. As you go through this stressful and difficult time, having friends and family around you can help to make the period much more manageable. Here are some additional suggestions that may help to facilitate the prompt return of your lost cat or dog.

  • As soon as you realize that your pet (wearing a Together Tag) is missing, go to the Together Tag homepage and click on "Lost a Pet". You will be prompted to log in to your Together Tag account and fill out a Lost Pet Report where you can add details of where and when your pet was lost.
  • Once you submit the Lost Pet Report, you will be taken to the "Missing Pet Resources" page. There you can easily create and print "lost pet" posters and send Lost Pet Alerts to local shelters.
  • Place your "lost pet" posters in local high-traffic areas such as post offices, markets, libraries, coffee shops, parks, bus stops and community centers.
  • Make sure that you check your pet's favorite hiding places. If your pet has been startled or scared, a hiding place may be the first place that your dog or cat runs to.
  • Put up signs on your regular walking route in case the dog has gone for a walk on his or her own.
  • Contact friends and neighbors who know your pet well. The more people who know about your missing dog or cat, the better the chances that your pet will be found and returned to you.
  • Place a missing pet ad in your local newspaper.
  • Contact local animal control facilities and shelters. Use the "See shelter list now" link on the Missing Pet Resources page as a starting point. Be sure to also consult your local phone directory as well.
  • Local animal control facilities often have website postings of lost animals. Check these sites frequently.
